چکیده
Supplement to the article " An appraisal of the classic forest succession paradigm with the shade-tolerance index. " Figure 1: Plot locations in southern Wisconsin used for the comparison with Curtis and McIntosh (1951). The overall geographical area considered is similar to the Figure 1 in Curtis and McIntosh (1951), while the number of plots (n=7017) considered here is substantially larger than in the original study (n=95).

An Appraisal of the Classic Forest Succession Paradigm with the Shade Tolerance Index
In this paper we revisit the classic theory of forest succession that relates shade tolerance and species replacement and assess its validity to understand patch-mosaic patterns of forested ecosystems of the USA. We introduce a macroscopic parameter called the "shade tolerance index" and compare it to the classic continuum index in southern Wisconsin forests. We exemplify shade tolerance driven...
متن کاملA Simulation Study of Forest Dynamics Under Multiple Harvest Regimes and Wind Disturbances in Southern Mississippi
Forests of the coastal plain region of the southern United States are unique in their productivity, biodiversity, and economic value. However, natural and anthropogenic disturbances may trigger forest age structure and spatial distribution variation. Detecting and predicting tree species distribution patterns can help to understand the dynamics of disturbances in order to develop adequate fores...
متن کاملShifts in southern Wisconsin forest canopy and understory richness, composition, and heterogeneity.
We resurveyed the under- and overstory species composition of 94 upland forest stands in southern Wisconsin in 2002-2004 to assess shifts in canopy and understory richness, composition, and heterogeneity relative to the original surveys in 1949-1950. The canopy has shifted from mostly oaks (Quercus spp.) toward more mesic and shade-tolerant trees (primarily Acer spp.). Oak-dominated early-succe...

متن کاملA forest growth and biomass module for a landscape simulation model, LANDIS: design, validation, and application
Predicting the long-term dynamics of forest systems depends on understanding multiple processes that often operate at vastly different scales. Disturbance and seed dispersal are landscape-scale phenomena and are spatially linked across the landscape. Ecosystem processes (e.g., growth and decomposition) have high annual and inter-specific variation and are generally quantified at the scale of a ...
